Volaris-107 Rig and Go Sirius Support Vessel Commence Appraisal Well Drilling for Groundbreaking Energy Storage Project

A significant maritime presence has captured the attention of residents and visitors along the Werribee South and Point Cook Coastline in Port Philip Bay. Standing tall amidst the waves is the Volaris-107 jack-up rig, accompanied by the Offshore Tug/Supply ship Go Sirius. These imposing structures have been deployed for an essential drilling operation in the region.

The Volaris-107 Jack-Up Rig and Go Sirius Support Ship

The Volaris-107 jack-up rig is a remarkable mobile platform that consists of a buoyant hull fitted with movable legs, allowing it to elevate itself above the sea surface. Built in 2006, this rig proudly sails under the flag of Liberia. Joining forces with the Volaris-107 is the Offshore Tug/Supply ship Go Sirius, constructed in 2012 and currently operating under the flag of Singapore. Together, they form a formidable duo that can undertake challenging drilling operations at sea.

Appraisal Well Drilling Commences

On June 24, 2023, GB Energy commenced the drilling of an appraisal well known as the Golden Beach-2 (GB-2) well. This crucial drilling operation holds the power to influence the design and operation of future production and storage wells, along with associated infrastructure scheduled for installation in 2024.

The Golden Beach Energy Project

GB Energy is the driving force behind the ambitious Golden Beach Energy Project, aimed at providing large-scale energy storage solutions to Australia’s east coast energy market. The successful outcome of the Golden Beach-2 well is pivotal in achieving this objective and ensuring a stable energy supply for the region.

Drilling Operations and Location

The Valaris-107 jack-up rig and support vessels arrived at the GB-2 location on June 24. After almost a month of rigorous operations, the drilling process was successfully completed on July 17. As of now, the rig is stationed offshore in Port Philip Bay, providing a distinctive sight for those observing from the shoreline.

The drilling took place approximately 3.4 kilometers offshore from the picturesque township of Golden Beach, a serene seaside community situated 36 kilometers from Sale. The town lies midway along Gippsland’s stunning Ninety Mile Beach, nestled between the coastal towns of Loch Sport and Seaspray.

Safety Measures Implemented

During the drilling operations, the Volaris-107 jack-up rig was visible from the shoreline. In adherence to strict safety protocols, a safety zone with a radius of 500 meters was established around the rig, ensuring the security and integrity of the operation throughout its duration.

Conclusion

The presence of the Volaris-107 jack-up rig and the Go Sirius support ship off the coast of Port Philip Bay signifies a momentous milestone for the Golden Beach Energy Project. As GB Energy progresses with its vision of providing large-scale energy storage to Australia’s east coast, the successful drilling of the Golden Beach-2 well remains paramount. The collaboration between advanced maritime technology and human expertise paves the way for a brighter and more sustainable energy future for the region.

Note: The operating day rate for Volaris-107 jack-up rig during this drilling operation is reported to be around $120,000 per day, showcasing the significant investment and commitment involved in advancing energy solutions.
