The surge in reckless jet-ski activities, including speeding, operating too close to populated areas, and occasional collisions with other vessels, have been the cause of many emergency responses so far in 2025. As the warm weather is expected to persist, operators of water vessels are advised to exercise extra caution while on water. They can also anticipate checks for sobriety, marine licenses, and safety inspections.

The small boat team, equipped with jet-skis and inflatable rescue boats, will be actively responding to search and rescue incidents on the water and discouraging risky behavior.

James Dalton, Inspector of the Water Police Squad, stated that the hot weather at the beginning of the year has led to a busy time for his team. “While most people do the right thing, there are some who show blatant disregard for the safety of other water users,” Dalton said.

He further highlighted the gravity of the situation by saying, “Already we’ve seen multiple serious collisions on the water. These young people are lucky to be alive, but instead of enjoying the summer they’re now recovering in hospital with serious injuries. People need to remember that a split-second decision can have lifelong consequences.”

Dalton emphasized that jet-ski users and water vessel operators need to act responsibly while on the water. “That means wearing a life-jacket, respecting the safety of other water users, and carrying the mandatory safety equipment.”
