Laverton Nth Worker Struck in the Head by Falling Machine Part

Falling machine part hits worker

WorkSafe has brought charges against plastics manufacturer A & J Australia Pty Ltd due to a serious machinery failure in their Laverton North workplace in November 2021.

The company is charged with violating Section 23(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act for failing to protect individuals other than their workers from potential health and safety hazards.

It is believed that A & J did not provide fixed guards to prevent access to dangerous moving parts, nor did they protect employees from any dropping pieces or products.

Furthermore, there was reportedly no system of work in place to ensure that the machinery was kept in a safe and operational condition and that essential components were kept to the manufacturer‘s specifications.

As a result of the incident, an employee from another company required hospital treatment for a head injury caused by a machine part that had fallen from over two metres.

The case will be heard at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 6 March 2023.
