In short:

Major works at the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue intersection are well underway, with the bridge over the Princes Freeway to be closed for an entire weekend to allow construction of a new outbound exit.

Bridge Closure To Enable Freeway Works

Works are ramping up at the intersection of Point Cook Road and Central Avenue, with the upgrades said to improve safety and reduce congestion, but major traffic disruptions are expected during construction.

From 9pm Friday 27 February to 5am Monday 1 March, the Point Cook Road Bridge over the Princes Freeway will be closed. The closure marks the start of significant works to create space beneath the bridge for a new outbound freeway exit servicing Seabrook and Point Cook. Motorists are being warned to expect significant delays and are advised to plan alternative routes.

The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade is described as reducing travel times, improving safety, and creating better walking connections.

The works include removing the existing roundabout and replacing it with a traffic light–controlled intersection, constructing a new outbound exit ramp from the Princes Freeway to Point Cook Road, adding new traffic lanes on Point Cook Road and Central Avenue near the intersection, and installing pedestrian crossings along with upgraded footpaths.

However, while the project improves outbound freeway access, the upgrades are expected to do little to increase inbound traffic flow. Vehicles travelling toward the city will still need to pass through Laverton using a single-lane freeway entry, despite traffic volumes having increased dramatically in recent years.

Further traffic impacts are expected as works continue, with drivers urged to allow extra travel time during construction periods.
