Crane removal to cause full lane closures
Motorists are being urged to plan ahead as significant disruptions hit the West Gate Freeway outbound this weekend.
From 11:59pm Friday, 11 April to 5:00am Monday, 14 April, only two outbound lanes will remain open between Williamstown Road and Millers Road as a 50-metre-high tower crane is dismantled. The crane, critical to building the outbound tunnel exit, is being removed piece by piece after two years of service lifting tunnel ventilation structures into place.
The Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp will also be closed for the entire weekend.

Outbound lanes will shut completely between Williamstown Road and Millers Road on Friday and Sunday nights to allow the setup and removal of a 450-tonne crane supporting the works.
Drivers are advised to avoid the West Gate Bridge and expect delays of up to an hour.
This work is part of the final stage of the West Gate Tunnel Project, which is expected to be completed later this year. Crews have recently resurfaced sections of the freeway, installed new road barriers, and finalised the inbound express lane layout.
Once complete, the project will offer a much-needed second river crossing, ease congestion on the West Gate Bridge, and reduce truck traffic on local roads by late 2025.
