A man was been arrested after a high-speed pursuit and crash on the 25th of July in Hoppers Crossing.
According to authorities, officers on patrol noticed a white Mazda Bravo utility, believed to have been stolen from Hamlyn Heights overnight, driving on the Midland Highway in Gheringhap at approximately 9:05 am. The Air Wing and ground police units then began following the vehicle as it sped through various Geelong suburbs, including Maude, Anakie, Lovely Banks, and Corio.
The pursuit continued onto the Princes Freeway before the Mazda eventually made its way through Werribee and Hoppers Crossing residential streets. In an attempt to evade police, the driver of the stolen ute slowed down to avoid a set of stop-sticks placed on Morris Road at the intersection of Sayers Road. However, the vehicle ultimately crashed into a tree around 10:30 am.
The driver, a 25-year-old man from Sunshine North, was immediately apprehended at the scene and taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. He was put under police guard to be interviewed at a later time.
He has since been charged with several offences, including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, possession of a drug of dependence, and driving while disqualified.
The man has been remanded and is set to appear at the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on August 5th. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Moorabool Crime Investigation Unit.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any CCTV/dashcam footage or information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
