Transforming Melbourne's West: Final Designs Unveiled for Melton Station
The final designs for the new Melton Station and four level crossing removals on the Melton Line have been released. These developments are expected to greatly improve travel in Melbourne’s booming west.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Danny Pearson announced that a new rail bridge will be built to eliminate traffic congestion at the Coburns and Exford roads level crossings. Additionally, new road bridges with dedicated shared use paths will be constructed along Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The new Melton Station will have four platforms to accommodate the rapidly growing community in Australia. The station will be accessible from both sides of the rail line and each platform will have lifts and stairs for accessibility. It will also feature pick-up and drop-off zones, a new air-conditioned waiting room, and a staffed ticket office. The precinct will be well-lit and monitored by security cameras. The final designs were influenced by over 850 submissions from locals, who expressed a desire for improved passenger facilities, safety measures, and native plantings.
Construction on the new Melton Station and the removal of the four level crossings is expected to begin later this year and be completed in 2026, two years ahead of schedule. In addition, the Labor Government is also planning a $650 million upgrade for the Melton Line, allowing for nine-car VLocity trains and increasing passenger capacity by 50%.
Minister Pearson stated, “We’re getting rid of these four dangerous and congested level crossings to make Melton boom gate free – which will cut congestion in Melbourne’s booming west.” Member for Melton Steve McGhie added, “These final designs show how fantastic the new Melton Station will look when it opens in 2026 and removing these level crossings will improve the daily commute for the 73,000 drivers that use these roads each day.” Member for Kororoit Luba Grigorovitch also commented, “These level crossing removals will transform the area, boosting safety and easing congestion. The final designs take us one step closer to construction starting later this year.”
The Level Crossing Removal Project aims to eliminate 110 level crossings by 2030, with plans to make the Lilydale, Sunbury, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston, and Werribee lines boom-gate free. These developments will greatly impact the way people live, work, and travel in Melbourne.
