The Ison Road Overpass project has reached a significant milestone in its goal to connect Wyndham West with the Princes Freeway. In late August, the installation of the central pier columns and crosshead was completed using a 400-tonne crane, marking a major step in the project’s development.
“The installation of the central pier columns and crosshead was an important milestone toward the project’s goal of helping connect Wyndham West with the Princes Freeway,” said Major Road Projects Victoria Program Director, Tim Price.
Local supplier WestKon played a key role in the construction process, pre-casting the five concrete and steel crosshead pieces at their Cobblebank facility. This minimised transport needs, supporting the local economy while contributing to the project’s progress. WestKon has previously provided more than 400 beams for other key infrastructure projects, including the M80 Upgrade and Monash Freeway Upgrade.

The lift and installation, which involved a total of 185 tonnes of materials, was completed over two days. The next phase of the project is scheduled for October, when 30 concrete beams will be lifted into place. These beams will connect the northern and southern sides of the overpass and form the base for the bridge’s roadway.
“We now look forward to installing the bridge beams as we continue working to deliver the Ison Road Overpass as vital transport infrastructure for the growing local community,” Price added.
The Ison Road Overpass, a four-lane bridge designed to span the Melbourne-Geelong railway line, will provide Wyndham West residents with a direct link to the Princes Freeway. The bridge has been future-proofed for expansion to six lanes and will include shared walking and cycling paths, as well as a dedicated cycling path beneath the bridge.
With a total investment of $114 million from both the Victorian and Australian governments, the overpass is set to reduce congestion in central Werribee, improve journey times, and provide vital infrastructure for the area’s growing population. The project is being delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria in partnership with construction company Decmil.
