Indian Prime Minister Set to Visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to Melbourne next month is shaping as a major moment for Wyndham, home to one of Australia’s largest and fastest-growing Indian communities.

But while tens of thousands are expected to welcome the Indian leader, the visit could also expose deep political divisions within parts of Melbourne’s west.

Wyndham TV understands Marvel Stadium has emerged as the preferred venue for the proposed Melbourne Meets Modi community reception, with almost 26,000 people already registering interest in attending.

The event is currently being planned for the evening of 9 July, with an official announcement expected once Australian and Indian authorities finalise arrangements.

A delegation of Indian security officials is understood to have inspected multiple Melbourne venues alongside Australian counterparts before Marvel Stadium emerged as the preferred option.

Modi in Nice

A Leader Loved and Loathed

For many Indian Australians, Modi remains one of the most influential political figures in modern Indian history, credited with strengthening India’s economy and international standing.

However, his expected arrival is also likely to reignite tensions within sections of Wyndham’s sizeable Punjabi and Sikh communities, where views on the Indian Prime Minister remain sharply divided.

The fault line largely centres on the Khalistan issue, a movement seeking an independent Sikh homeland in India’s Punjab region.

In recent years, Khalistan-related protests have erupted across several Western countries, including Australia, with demonstrators accusing the Modi Government of suppressing Sikh activists and dissent.

Supporters of Modi reject those claims and argue his government is protecting India’s national security and territorial integrity.

The issue remains one of the most contentious political debates within parts of the global Punjabi diaspora, including communities across Melbourne’s west.

Visit Will Rouse Strong Reactions

Wyndham’s Indian community is far from politically uniform. While many residents are expected to welcome Modi’s visit, others remain critical of his government’s approach to democracy, minority rights and political opposition.

The visit is expected to attract significant interest across Wyndham, where Indian-born residents make up a substantial and growing share of the population.

If confirmed, the Melbourne event would be one of the largest Indian diaspora gatherings held in Australia in recent years.

The Melbourne Meets Modi registration portal remains open, with registrations scheduled to close at 11.59pm on 15 June.

With almost 26,000 expressions of interest already lodged, the event is shaping as a major political and cultural moment for Melbourne’s west.
