Police are currently investigating a disturbing assault that occurred in Truganina on the evening of 25 August. The incident, which took place around 7:10 pm on Belvedere Drive, involved a 32-year-old woman and her 4-year-old child, who were approached and attacked by an unknown female offender.

The victim, who was crossing the road with her child after leaving an event, was confronted by a woman described as having a very fair complexion, a non-Australian accent, and possibly of Polynesian or Asian descent. The attacker, wearing a black hat and sunglasses, initially made an unclear comment to the victim, who responded with a polite “Sorry,” assuming the woman was lost or in need of assistance.

However, the situation escalated when the offender removed her sunglasses and aggressively questioned the victim’s presence in the area, asking, “Why Muslim here?” The victim, confused by the comment, tried to clarify, but the attacker suddenly lunged at her, pulling at her hijab. In self-defence, the victim struggled to free herself from the attacker’s grip, leading to a physical altercation that spilled onto a nearby grassy area.

The victim’s 4-year-old child, witnessing the terrifying scene, screamed in distress, adding to the chaos. The struggle continued for some time, with the attacker refusing to release her grip on the victim. Fortunately, the victim’s mother, who was nearby, heard the commotion and rushed to assist, along with a couple who had exited their car and other passersby. Together, they managed to separate the two women.

During the scuffle, the attacker sustained injuries, including a bleeding nose, and eventually fled the scene toward Montgomery Drive after the victim mentioned taking her photo and contacting the police.

A 56-year-old woman, who intervened during the attack, had her jacket stolen by the fleeing offender but was not physically injured. The victim, though shaken and with minor injuries, managed to take photos of the attacker before she escaped.

The police are treating this incident with urgency, and an investigation is ongoing. At this stage, the motivation behind the assault remains unclear, and it is believed that the parties involved were not known to each other.

The victim has labelled the incident as an act of Islamophobia and is focused on ensuring justice is served. She urges anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward. Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area at the time is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppers.com.au.
