The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust offers families a chance to secure crypts in Werribee Cemetery’s latest mausoleum expansion, while burial space in the area becomes scarce.

The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust has announced plans for a new addition to the Werribee Mausoleum, located within Werribee Cemetery. The new structure will be built adjacent to the existing mausoleum, offering local families the opportunity to purchase crypts and register their interest.

The current Werribee Mausoleum, which began as the Wyndham Community Mausoleum, has developed into two visually appealing arrangements. Its distinctive tiered black roof is a well-known landmark within the cemetery.

The new crypts, featuring contemporary architectural designs, have already generated significant interest from the local community. Each family crypt will offer space for services and contemplation, with bronze panels providing a sense of privacy and peacefulness for visiting families.

As of January 2024, Werribee Cemetery has reached full capacity, making it the only burial site in Australia’s fastest-growing council area to do so. With no available plots remaining, only those with pre-existing reservations can be buried there, although above-ground burials and cremations are still available.

A spokesperson for the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust stated that there is a new burial area currently being developed.

Due to the lack of available burial spaces, Wyndham residents are now having to turn to cemeteries in Altona, Melton, or Keilor, often resulting in families being buried away from their local community.
