New Allergy Devices For Schools

Anaphylaxis

In short:

Victorian schools, including those in Wyndham, will introduce two new anaphylaxis treatment options in 2026, expanding emergency response devices to four. Staff training will run in Terms 1 and 2 2026 to ensure schools are prepared for severe allergic reactions.

Extended Treatment Options in Schools

Victorian schools – including those across Wyndham – are preparing for changes to how students at risk of anaphylaxis are treated, with two new emergency options set to become available from 2026.

The update means schools will have access to four approved adrenaline treatments instead of two. Currently, injection-based devices EpiPen and Anapen are used in schools.

From 2026, they will be joined by Neffy, a needle-free adrenaline nasal spray, and Jext, another adrenaline autoinjector.

Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate treatment with adrenaline.

It can be triggered by foods such as nuts, dairy and seafood, as well as insect stings.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved the nasal spray device, marking the first needle-free adrenaline treatment available in Australia.

The additional options are expected to give families and schools more flexibility, particularly for children who are anxious about injections.

Under current rules, Victorian schools with enrolled students at risk of anaphylaxis must ensure staff are trained in managing allergic emergencies.

Training workshops will run in Term 1 and Term 2 2026 to ensure school staff are familiar with all four devices before the new treatments become widely available. Independent and Catholic school staff can also register.

Schools will be required to update their anaphylaxis management policies and procedures in line with the expanded treatment options.

Families seeking more information about availability of the new devices are advised to speak with their GP or visit Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia. Further details about school policy requirements are available at:
