The new 50km/h speed limit on Synnot Street came into effect this morning following a council-backed road safety audit. The change is designed to reduce risks and improve visibility near car park entry points in Werribee’s city centre.
Motorists urged to drive with care
The new 50km/h speed limit on Synnot Street, Werribee, officially came into effect this morning, marking a key step in Wyndham City’s plan to improve road safety in the city centre.
Previously set at 60km/h, the reduced limit is designed to address long-standing safety concerns along one of Werribee’s busiest roads. The change follows a push from Wyndham City Mayor Cr Mia Shaw, who has been vocal about visibility issues at car park exits and general safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers along the corridor.
The reduction was backed by an independent road safety audit that confirmed the new limit, along with the removal of 16 non-compliant parking bays, would significantly enhance visibility and improve traffic flow safety.
Cr Shaw previously described the change as a “common-sense, evidence-based approach” and said the impact on travel times would be minimal. “This initiative strikes a balance between the need for road safety and the community’s access needs, thereby helping to create a safer, more accessible City Centre for all,” she said.
Electronic speed signs were updated overnight and physical signage along Synnot Street now reflects the new 50km/h limit. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and be aware of the change, especially during peak hours when the area is at its busiest.
Wyndham City Council said it will continue monitoring traffic patterns and safety data in the coming months to assess the impact of the change.
