A six-car crash caused peak-hour chaos on the Princes Freeway at Laverton this morning, blocking all citybound lanes for more than two hours.
The crash occurred just after 7am near Kororoit Creek Road, with traffic forced to funnel through a single emergency lane. Massive delays built up from Hoppers Crossing, stretching into the morning and impacting thousands of drivers.
Authorities advised motorists to avoid the freeway and detour via Hoppers Crossing, Truganina and Laverton North.
Although it’s still unclear whether anyone was injured in the collision, the incident had a major flow-on effect across the western suburbs.
As of 9am, all citybound lanes on the Princes Freeway have reopened, but traffic remains heavily congested, with delays of up to 60 minutes still affecting commuters.
Surrounding roads including Sayers Road, Old Geelong Road, Point Cook Road, Forsyth Road and Leakes Road have also seen heavier-than-usual traffic as motorists attempted to bypass the congestion.
