Help improve pet ownership laws
Wyndham City is seeking community input to revise the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-2030. The city aims to address the needs of both pet owners and non-pet owners. The four-year plan is being updated in accordance with the Domestic Animals Act 1994, stated Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw.
Shaw highlighted the significance of pet management in the community, referring to the 891 submissions received during the last consultation. “This strong participation in consultation shows the importance of pet management in our community,” she said.
The Mayor elaborated on the outcomes of the previous consultation, stating, “In response to feedback from our last consultation we increased Ranger patrols to reduce dogs wandering off lead; increased education about where it was appropriate and not appropriate to let a dog off-lead and promoted responsible pet ownership, among other actions.”
The Mayor encouraged both pet owners and non-pet owners to contribute their feedback to help shape the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-2030. “For many of us, pets are part of the family and we want to keep them safe and happy while also managing community expectations and concerns,” she added.
The updated plan will incorporate learnings from previous plans and a review of data on dog attacks, registrations, and impoundments. Feedback can be submitted online until Saturday, May 31, at www.theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au/draft-damp-2026-30.
The city has also organized several drop-in sessions for those who wish to discuss the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-2030 in person. These sessions will be held at various locations including the Dog Park, the Civic Centre, the Tarneit Community Centre, and the Off Lead dog park on dates ranging from May 3 to May 22.
