Point Cook Residents Unite to Overcome Dispute, Saltwater Coast Bridge to Open After Community Push

Local Triumph as Aveo Group Relents: Saltwater Coast Bridge Access Granted Following Parks Victoria and Developer Standoff

In a heartening display of community solidarity, Point Cook residents have successfully rallied together to overcome a dispute that had kept the newly built Saltwater Coast Bridge closed. The alleged conflict involved Parks Victoria and private developer Aveo Group, raising concerns among locals who were eager to access the Bay Trail.

The Bay Trail extension, designed to create a safer and more direct route from Williamstown to Point Cook Coastal Park, faced a roadblock when Aveo Group, which had constructed the southern section of the trail, kept the gates closed even after Parks Victoria’s section was completed and open to the public.

Wyndham TV investigated the matter and reached out to Parks Victoria for clarification. Parks Victoria Regional Director, Sofia De Lesantis, neither confirmed nor denied any dispute but emphasized the completion of the section built by Parks Victoria, extending approximately 260 meters from Sanctuary Lakes South Boulevard.

Local residents, frustrated by the closed gates, took matters into their own hands, bombarding Aveo Group with emails. Finally, after persistent outreach, Aveo’s Senior Development Manager, Kim Nguyen, responded with a communication acknowledging community requests.

The Bay Trail extension will finally open on January 18th

“While Aveo remains in discussions with Parks Victoria and Wyndham City Council regarding management of the Saltwater Coast Bridge and surrounding reserve,” Nguyen stated, “we acknowledge the community requests to use the bridge and are pleased to confirm that the Saltwater Coast Bridge will be made open for public use effective Thursday 18 January 2024.”

The Bay Trail extension aims to replace a 3.8km detour with a 400m shared-use trail, facilitating a flat, off-road journey for pedestrians and cyclists traveling to Point Cook Coastal Park. The completed trail link offers an opportunity for residents to enjoy park facilities, have picnics, and take in scenic views of the city, Cheetham Wetlands, and Port Phillip Bay.

The resolution of the dispute marks a triumph for the Point Cook community, showcasing the power of collective action in ensuring public access to vital infrastructure. The Saltwater Coast Bridge will stand as a testament to the resilience and determination of a community determined to overcome obstacles for the greater good.
