In short:
The upgraded Point Cook Road and Central Avenue intersection in Altona Meadows is now open, replacing a long-standing traffic bottleneck with traffic lights.
New Lights And Freeway Access
A major intersection connecting Point Cook, Seabrook and Altona Meadows has reopened after its roundabout was replaced with traffic lights.
The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue intersection is now fully operational, with a new connection also linking motorists to the Princes Freeway exit ramp.
The intersection has long been a major bottleneck for motorists, particularly during peak periods, with traffic from Point Cook Road, Central Avenue and nearby freeway ramps converging at the former roundabout.
Its replacement with traffic lights changes how vehicles move through the busy gateway between Point Cook, Seabrook and Altona Meadows.
Major construction is expected to wrap up in December, six months ahead of the original schedule, while landscaping and finishing works will continue into early 2027.
Motorists will face another temporary disruption from 13 September, when the Princes Freeway exit ramp onto Central Avenue closes until mid-November for remaining works.
Drivers will instead exit at Point Cook Road using the newly opened loop ramp during the closure.
The upgrade also includes additional lanes along Central Avenue and changes to freeway access around the intersection.
Work on the project has involved various lane closures and traffic changes affecting motorists throughout construction.
