Police Break Silence Over Luke Briggs Death

Luke Briggs Death

In short:

Two Victoria Police officers have been charged with negligent manslaughter over Luke Briggs’ death following an arrest in Hoppers Crossing. Police say the incident was thoroughly investigated and support for the family remains in place.

Officers charged after year-long investigation

Two Victoria Police officers have been charged with negligent manslaughter over the death of Luke Briggs, who died in hospital after being arrested in Hoppers Crossing in July 2024.

A 29-year-old constable and a 45-year-old sergeant, both from Victoria Police’s North West Metro Region, have been charged following a Homicide Squad investigation with oversight from Professional Standards Command. The two officers were suspended shortly after the incident and have remained stood down since.

They have been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 12 September 2025.

Arrest and death

Luke Briggs, 35, was arrested on 15 July 2024 at the corner of Heaths and Tarneit Roads in relation to an alleged road rage incident. He became unresponsive shortly after being restrained by police and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. He died eight days later, on 23 July 2024.

Police acknowledge impact

In a statement, Victoria Police said the matter had been thoroughly investigated.

“I understand the news today will be concerning and difficult for many in the community, however I want to reassure them that Victoria Police does not shy away from taking action to uphold community trust and confidence in our organisation,” a spokesperson said.

“The overwhelming majority of our police do the right thing day in and day out and provide exemplary service to the community. Today’s update should not take away from their efforts more broadly.”

“However, it is vital that where incidents such as this occur, they are investigated thoroughly regardless of a police officer’s rank, position or tenure. Our thoughts today are also with the Briggs family and we will ensure they continue to have a range of support services in place as the matter progresses.”

Memorial held in July

The charges come less than two months after a memorial was held at the site of the arrest on 15 July 2025, marking one year since the incident.

Court appearance scheduled

The two officers are due to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 12 September.

The case is expected to receive significant attention as it progresses through the legal system.
