In short:

Wyndham City is reminding residents that pools and spas capable of holding more than 30cm of water must be registered and have compliant safety barriers. Victorian laws require inspections every four years, with fines and prosecution possible for non-compliance.

Pool Compliance Checks Required

Wyndham City is reminding pool and spa owners that safety barriers and up-to-date certification are required year-round to help prevent backyard drownings.

Pool and spa barriers remain one of the key measures used to reduce drowning incidents in Victoria, particularly involving young children.

Under Victorian legislation, property owners must register any pool or spa capable of holding more than 30 centimetres of water with their local council. These barriers must also be inspected every four years by a registered building practitioner to ensure they meet current safety standards.

Following a successful inspection, owners receive a Certificate of Pool and Spa Barrier Compliance.

New pools or spas must be registered with council within 30 days of completion.

Councils across Victoria oversee the registration and compliance process, ensuring property owners meet the state’s safety requirements.

Wyndham City says owners who fail to register or maintain compliant barriers risk significant fines and potential prosecution.

Authorities stress that maintaining safe and compliant barriers is a simple but critical step in reducing preventable drownings in backyard pools.
