Promised Monitor Still Missing

In short:

Wyndham’s leadership crisis is nearing its fourth week, with no sign of the state-appointed monitor promised to restore stability at Wyndham City Council.

Radio Silence on Monitor Appointment

Wyndham’s leadership crisis is on the brink of its fourth week, with the promised state-appointed monitor still nowhere to be seen — raising questions about the Allan Labor Government’s willingness to act.

On 1 April, then Local Government Minister Nick Staikos said a monitor would be installed to “restore stability in the leadership and ensure good governance” at Wyndham City Council.

He said he was “deeply concerned by the ongoing instability in leadership” and that residents deserved a council “entirely focused on them.”

Weeks on, there are still no details on who the monitor will be, when they will arrive, or what powers they will hold.

The vacuum comes as the political crisis intensifies.

Scandal Continues as Singh Digs in

Fallout escalated after it emerged on 30 March that Mayor Preet Singh had written a character reference in 2024 for Kashyap Patel, as a broader political storm erupted around Liberal upper house preselection chaos.

Patel was later convicted of child sex offences. He pleaded guilty to grooming a child under 16, transmitting indecent communication to a person under 16, and sexually assaulting a child under 16.

He was sentenced in September 2024 to nine months’ jail and a two-year community corrections order.

The revelation has triggered sustained political pressure, with multiple councillors moving against Singh and community anger spilling into the streets.

Despite that, Singh has not stepped down. Deputy Mayor Jasmine Hill is currently performing mayoral duties while the standoff drags on.

Councillors Unified Against Mayor

Three councillors have now called an emergency meeting for 27 April to move a vote of no confidence, setting up a potential showdown inside the chamber.

Outside it, unrest is building. A third resident-led protest calling for the mayor’s resignation is believed to be in the works, following two earlier demonstrations.

Criticism is also mounting over how the state government has handled the situation.

Staikos had faced years of calls to appoint a municipal monitor at Wyndham, with critics arguing the intervention should have come long before the current crisis.

Now, some say the move — announced amid the Singh controversy — looks reactive rather than strategic.

Labor new cabinet

New Lineup, No Movement on Monitor

Earlier this week, Premier Jacinta Allan removed Staikos from the Local Government portfolio in a cabinet reshuffle, replacing him with Paul Hamer.

But the change at the top has yet to translate into action on the ground.

With no monitor in place, no timeline announced, and council still locked in a leadership deadlock, pressure continues to build on the state government to follow through on its commitment.
