Provide Feedback on Glass Bin

Glass bins

In short:

Wyndham residents are being invited to provide feedback on a proposed fourth household bin dedicated to glass recycling, with the rollout mandated by the Victorian Government by mid-2027.

Have Your Say on Bin Scheme

Wyndham residents are being encouraged to have their say on a controversial state government plan that would see a fourth household bin introduced across the municipality exclusively for glass recycling.

Under the Victorian Government’s statewide recycling reforms, councils are required to introduce a dedicated glass-only kerbside bin service by mid-2027 as part of a standardised four-bin system.

However, Wyndham City Council is among a growing number of councils opposing the rollout, arguing the changes may create unnecessary costs and confusion for residents, particularly following the introduction of Victoria’s 10-cent Container Deposit Scheme.

The Container Deposit Scheme, launched statewide in 2023, allows residents to return eligible drink containers in exchange for a refund, with critics of the fourth bin claiming much of the valuable recyclable glass is already being diverted away from household bins through the scheme.

Wyndham formally requested the Victorian Government postpone the rollout of the additional glass bin, warning the timing and practicality of the reform should be reconsidered.

Concerns raised by opponents include the financial burden of purchasing and maintaining additional bins, increased truck movements on local streets, and the challenge of finding space for another large household bin on residential properties.

Supporters of the reform argue separating glass improves recycling quality by reducing contamination in mixed recycling loads and helps recover more material that can be reused locally.

The state government has maintained the reforms are necessary to modernise Victoria’s waste and recycling system and reduce landfill.

Residents can now provide feedback on the proposed changes as councils  continue discussions around how the rollout would operate locally.
