The Victorian arts community is mourning the loss of acclaimed First Nations artist Tommy Day III, known professionally as Jirri Jirri.

A proud Kerrupmara, Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta and Wemba Wemba artist, Tommy became widely recognised for his large-scale public artworks and contributions to community-led projects across Victoria.

In Wyndham, he was known for several significant works, including the striking eagle mural overlooking Synnot Street in Werribee and his involvement in ‘Mooroop Yarkeen’ (Spirit Dreaming), Australia’s largest First Nations mural.

His work blended cultural storytelling, public art and community engagement, helping transform prominent public spaces while sharing First Nations perspectives and histories.

Tributes have flowed from artists, organisations and community members following news of his passing, with many reflecting on the impact he had on public spaces and cultural expression.

Tommy Day III leaves behind a lasting artistic legacy through the works he created and the communities they continue to inspire.
