Residents Fight Housing Switch

A Williams Landing petition with more than 150 signatures is calling on Wyndham Council to reverse approved town centre changes that allow new housing. Residents say land meant for community facilities is being lost and want the original plans restored.

Petition to Overturn Housing Plan

Wyndham councillors have received a petition opposing changes to the Williams Landing Town Centre, with residents calling for the decision to be reversed.

The petition was submitted on 19 March 2026 and presented at the 24 March council meeting. It was signed by 153 people, including 139 valid signatures, and focuses on changes that allow more housing in the area.

The changes were recently approved by councillors at a planning committee meeting and relate to Cedar Woods’ proposal for a $51 million residential subdivision.

Residents say land that was meant for community facilities and shops has instead been turned into housing. The changes allow for 154 new townhouses, many under 100 square metres, as well as two larger sites that could see more three-storey buildings in the future.

Petitioners argue the decision shifts land away from community and commercial use and into housing, and say it does not reflect the long-term needs of the area. They also claim the change was made without support being voiced in the council chamber.

They are calling on council to reverse the decision and restore plans for key services, including a government school, a library, and a community centre.

The petition also urges council to push the state government to fund local schools, ensure future changes do not reduce space for community services, and carry out proper consultation with residents before making further decisions.

Concerns have also been raised about public transport, with petitioners calling for upgrades to the Werribee line as the population grows.

Councillors have formally noted the petition and asked the Chief Executive Officer to respond in writing to the lead petitioner.
