Residents Frustrated by Persistent Cannabis Odours at Werribee’s Unison Housing Block

Complaints about cannabis smoke go unanswered as Unison residents endure overwhelming smells daily.

Residents of a relatively new housing complex in Werribee, Unison Housing, are becoming increasingly distressed by an ongoing issue with strong cannabis odours throughout the building. Though the building opened less than two years ago, complaints about the smell have been piling up, with residents reporting that despite raising the issue with management, little has been done to resolve it.

It’s believed that the smell originates from inside the building, where some tenants are reportedly using cannabis without concern for how it affects their neighbours.

The odour is pervasive, drifting into private apartments as well as common areas like hallways, elevators, and even the building’s entrance.

One long-term resident, who has lived in the building since it opened, voiced her frustrations: “It’s become impossible to enjoy any fresh air in my own home. I used to leave my windows open, but now I can’t even do that without the entire place smelling like cannabis. I have young kids, and I worry about the long-term effects of constantly being exposed to it. It’s not fair—we pay rent like everyone else, but it feels like we’re being ignored.”

Another tenant described the situation as unbearable, expressing frustration that management has yet to take meaningful action.

The ongoing presence of the odour has sparked concerns about possible health effects from prolonged exposure to cannabis smoke, in addition to a general decline in the quality of living conditions. Despite multiple complaints, residents say the issue persists with no immediate solution in sight.

Attempts to contact building management for a statement were unsuccessful. As the problem lingers, residents are calling for better ventilation and stricter enforcement of rules to prevent the spread of the odour into shared spaces.

Many residents are feeling a growing sense of frustration and helplessness but remain hopeful that their concerns will eventually be addressed to restore a healthier and more pleasant living environment.
