In short:
Wyndham Council has axed its free snake removal service, prompting backlash from residents. Locals must now pay for private catchers, just as snake season begins.
Locals Must Now Pay for Catchers
Wyndham City Council has scrapped its free snake removal service, leaving residents to foot the bill for private catchers even as snake sightings are expected to rise in coming months.
Previously, residents could rely on Council to assist with the safe removal of snakes, but the updated policy now limits that support to Council-managed land only, such as public parks or community facilities.
For all other locations — including private homes, backyards, and schools — residents must now organise and pay for a licensed snake catcher themselves.
Local resident Roza criticised the change, saying:
“This is ridiculous. Wyndham Council are removing so much and then paying for stuff a lot of ratepayers didn’t agree to.”
“Education is definitely needed — far too many think a blue tongue is a snake and far too many react so quickly and frantically. But to remove entirely this service is not a good idea.”
The decision comes at the start of Victoria’s snake season, which typically runs from October to April, as warmer weather sees increased snake activity across the region’s parks, waterways, and growing suburban edges.
Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, and harming or attempting to capture one without a permit is illegal. Residents are urged to remain calm and contact a licensed catcher if they spot a snake on their property.
Council advises that for snakes found in public areas, such as footpaths or reserves, residents can still call Wyndham City on 1300 023 411 for assistance.
