In short:
A Council Facebook post urging vegetation maintenance has backfired, prompting Wyndham residents to accuse the organisation of failing to uphold its own standards. The backlash highlights concerns about road conditions, overgrown reserves and inconsistencies in Council services.
Community questions council maintenance responsibilities
A Wyndham City Council Facebook post encouraging residents to tidy vegetation during the high-growth season has drawn a strong reaction online, with many residents accusing the Council of lecturing the community while failing to address its own maintenance responsibilities.
The Council’s original message urged residents to maintain nature strips, remain patient with neighbours during rapid vegetation growth, and keep properties clear of litter as warm and humid weather continues to accelerate plant growth across the municipality. But within minutes, comments turned into a broader discussion about road conditions, overgrown reserves and perceived inconsistencies in Council services.
Sheafer Richards wrote, “Wow this post backfired on you guys! Also, whilst we are talking about responsibilities what are you going to do about the state of the roads in Werribee South whenever it rains? Your post the other day clearly showed 90% of the roads there are under your management and with the amount of mud left on the roads by the farmers it’s only a matter of time before another serious accident occurs. Totally unacceptable, all the farmers should have a washdown or grate arrangement wherever their tractors enter the main roads from their properties.”

Another resident, Michael Brcic, raised concerns about nature strip expectations, saying, “Council owns the grass on the nature strip, will fine you for parking on it but expects home owners to mow the grass. What an absolute con job.”
Jodie Rundle also criticised the state of vegetation near local reserves: “Don’t give us lectures about standards driving along Greens Rd to Ballan Road around the reserve and creek never seen the grass so long. How about maintaining your patch before lecturing us about ours. Snakes paradise and only getting worse for people out walking their dogs not to mention the residents in those areas. To top it off you removed the free snake catchers resource. Bloody disgrace Wyndham Council. Oh but congratulations to providing free security to certain areas while the rest of us live in fear in our own homes.”
While Council’s intent was to encourage shared responsibility during a period of fast-growing vegetation, the post instead became a focal point for wider frustrations, with residents raising issues about road upkeep, grass length in public reserves and the removal of certain services.
