Safety Boost For McGrath Road

In short:

Traffic calming measures are coming to McGrath Road in Wyndham Vale after Wyndham councillors unanimously approved a road safety package on 28 July. The works include a new traffic calming device near Presidents Park and a road safety audit to identify any further improvements.

Traffic Calming Device To Be Installed

A notorious stretch of McGrath Road in Wyndham Vale is set for safety upgrades after Wyndham councillors unanimously approved new traffic calming measures on Tuesday 28 July.

Councillors endorsed the installation of a traffic calming device near 409 McGrath Road and approved a road safety audit of the section of road alongside Presidents Park following a petition from local residents.

The petition, submitted in February 2026 and signed by 16 residents, called for urgent road safety improvements to better protect pedestrians, motorists and the surrounding community.

Council officers investigated the concerns through a site inspection and speed survey, which found the 85th percentile speed exceeded the posted 50km/h limit.

The report also found most vehicles travelling through the area were exceeding the speed limit, prompting officers to recommend traffic calming measures.

Exact Designs Not Confirmed Yet

The exact type of traffic calming device will be determined during the design phase, with options including a raised platform or speed cushion.

Nearby property owners will be consulted before construction begins, with installation expected later in 2026.

As part of the unanimous decision, council will also undertake a road safety audit of McGrath Road adjacent to Presidents Park to determine whether any further safety improvements are required.

An electronic message board will also be deployed in the interim to encourage motorists to slow down.

The traffic calming works are expected to cost about $10,000 and will be funded through council’s transport safety operational budget
