A Sanctuary Lakes man has assisted in detaining a knife-wielding suspect following a stabbing in Melbourne’s CBD early this morning. Police believe a man armed with a knife and acting erratically ran through a shopping centre carpark on Lonsdale Street about 6am.
Two bystanders gave chase, pursuing the man south along Elizabeth Street before detaining him near the intersection of Lonsdale Street. Officers arrived seconds later and arrested a 32-year-old Dallas man at the scene.
During the arrest, a 41-year-old Maddingley man received a stab wound to the lower body and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second bystander, a 35-year-old Sanctuary Lakes man, was uninjured.
Following the incident, and a recent stabbing on Little Bourke Street, the Public Order Response Team has increased patrols across Melbourne’s CBD to help detect and deter crime.
