School Holiday Fun Across The West

School holidays

In short:

Families across Melbourne’s west have plenty of ways to keep the kids entertained these winter school holidays, from interactive art and live theatre to science and creative experiences. Here’s a guide to some of the biggest events happening throughout the break.

Plenty on This Winter Break

Parents looking to keep the kids entertained these winter school holidays have plenty of options across Melbourne’s west, with interactive art, live theatre, museums and family attractions all on offer.

Whether you’re staying close to home or planning a day trip, there’s something happening for children of all ages throughout the break.

One of the standout local attractions is Polyglot Theatre’s Paper Planet and Sound of Drawing at Wyndham Art Gallery in Werribee.

Running from 7 July to 12 July, the immersive experience transforms the gallery into a creative playground where children are encouraged to build an ever-changing world using paper, tape and their imaginations.

Chance to Channel Little Artists

Families can explore a forest of towering cardboard trees, create creatures, costumes and stories, or experiment with Sound of Drawing, an interactive installation that turns children’s artwork and movements into a unique soundscape.

Every session is different as the artwork continues to grow throughout the week.

Families wanting to venture a little further can visit Scienceworks in Spotswood, where interactive exhibits provide plenty of hands-on fun during the school holidays.

Adults can also return on 3 July for Planetarium Nights, featuring astronomy presentations, a guided tour of the night sky and immersive dome films exploring planets, black holes and the wider universe.

Art lovers can make the short trip to Newport, where Meagan Streader’s A Residual Pulse is showing at The Substation until 22 August.

Lots of Fun Learning Away From Class

The exhibition transforms the former power station through suspended sculptures, neon installations and illuminated pathways inspired by the building’s industrial history, creating an immersive experience that explores the relationship between architecture, light and memory.

For younger children, Spot is returning to the stage at Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds.

Based on Eric Hill’s much-loved books, the live production follows Spot and his friends on a farm adventure as they search for missing animals with the help of the audience.

Featuring puppetry, songs and interactive puzzles, the performance has also been designed to cater for children of all abilities.

Local libraries across Wyndham are also hosting a range of school holiday activities, while indoor play centres, community events and creative workshops provide even more opportunities for families looking to fill the winter break without travelling too far from home.
