Schools Broaden Language Offerings

Students

In short:

Hindi and Punjabi teaching is expanding across Victoria, with Wyndham Central College already delivering Hindi at VCE level. The rollout adds new teachers as demand grows in Melbourne’s west.

More Languages Offered to Students

Victorian public schools are expanding their language programs, with new Hindi and Punjabi teachers entering classrooms this term as part of a state government initiative.

A total of 18 teachers have started across the system after completing a specialist training course at Monash University focused on teaching Hindi and Punjabi.

The rollout includes a local impact for Wyndham, with Wyndham Central College among the schools already offering Hindi at VCE level.

Two other schools — Alkira Secondary College and Mount Ridley P-12 College — are part of the program and help support other schools introducing the languages.

The teachers are the first to complete a one-year methodology course designed to build capability in delivering Hindi and Punjabi programs in public schools. Their training is supported through government-funded scholarships.

The expansion reflects growing demand for the languages in Victorian schools, including in areas like Wyndham where multicultural communities continue to grow.

Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ben Carroll said the program is aimed at building teaching capacity.

“The efforts of this talented group of teachers will strengthen intercultural connections in our schools,” he said.

“We’re making sure we have teachers who can meet the growing demand for Hindi and Punjabi teachers in Victorian schools.”

The state government has also flagged a broader language teaching scholarship program to increase the number of qualified language teachers in coming years.
