The SES is responsible for handling natural disasters including floods, storms, earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides. Additionally, it operates the most extensive road crash rescue network in Victoria.
Volunteers are needed across rural, regional, and metropolitan areas. In emergencies, they provide frontline assistance and contribute to emergency planning and strategy. Volunteers also play an important role in educating the community about emergency preparedness.
As part of their role, volunteers receive accredited training in areas such as first aid, general rescue, and chainsaw operations. They also receive training in community education and media relations.
The SES also offers junior memberships for individuals aged between 15 and 18.
