Wyndham City Seeks Public Input on 2023 Housing Strategy for Sustainable Growth
Wyndham City is seeking input from its residents regarding the newly proposed Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy 2023. This comprehensive strategy aims to ensure that housing within the city is strategically located and thoughtfully designed to cater to the evolving needs of the community.
With the anticipation of accommodating a population growth of more than 200,000 residents over the next two decades, Wyndham City Mayor, Councillor Susan McIntyre, emphasized the importance of careful planning to meet the demands of the city’s diverse populace. The Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy 2023 is designed to address this challenge proactively.
The core principles of the strategy focus on the development of new homes in areas that are proximate to existing and planned services and transportation. To achieve this, the plan outlines an action plan that not only facilitates greater housing diversity but also prioritizes high-quality design while respecting and enhancing the unique character of Wyndham’s various neighborhoods.
Councillor Susan McIntyre expressed her enthusiasm for the strategy, stating, “Wyndham is growing at a rapid pace and over the next 20 years our population is expected to grow by more than 200,000 residents. To accommodate our growing future population, we need to carefully plan to ensure that new housing is well located and well designed to meet the needs of our diverse community.”
The strategy classifies three distinct categories of housing change, each serving a unique purpose in the context of future growth. These categories include limited change, characterized by constraints on increased housing; incremental change, which focuses on areas near activity centers and future residential zones; and substantial change, concentrated around transport hubs.
Furthermore, the Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy 2023 introduces the concept of neighbourhood character precincts, which are designed to guide new developments in alignment with the community’s desired character. This approach is intended to preserve the unique essence of each neighborhood while embracing evolution and change.
To facilitate public participation, a public consultation period is set to run from 14 August to 10 September. Wyndham City encourages its residents to provide feedback on the strategy through its dedicated platform: Wyndham Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy.
In addition to the online platform, in-person drop-in sessions have been scheduled to provide residents with the opportunity to engage directly with the strategy’s details and share their thoughts. The drop-in sessions are as follows:
