Court Awaits Both Drivers
Late on Wednesday night in Laverton, two work colleagues were stopped side by side at a set of red traffic lights on Fitzgerald Road.
A 24-year-old man from Sunshine was driving a Mercedes C200 sedan, while his 23-year-old male colleague was driving a Kia Sportage in the adjacent lane.
When the traffic lights turned green, both vehicles accelerated rapidly. Police allege the drivers passed a marked police vehicle and continued to accelerate, reaching speeds more than 65 km/h above the posted limit.
Police intercepted both vehicles a short distance later. As a result, both vehicles were impounded and both drivers are expected to appear in court in relation to the alleged street racing and excessive speed.
Each driver is also required to pay a $1,225 vehicle impound fee.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
