The recent allegations of sexual assaults in childcare centres across Melbourne’s western suburbs have sent shockwaves through the community, leaving families, victims, and residents grappling with trauma and uncertainty. In times of such distress, the Western Region Centre Against Sexual Assault (WestCASA), a leading not-for-profit counselling service, stands as a beacon of hope, offering specialized support to help those affected navigate this crisis. With a 38-year history of serving the region, WestCASA provides critical services to victim-survivors, their families, and community members, ensuring no one faces these challenges alone.

WestCASA’s mission is to facilitate the recovery and healing of victim-survivors of sexual assault while working toward a world free from the fear of sexual violence. Operating in Melbourne’s western metropolitan region, including Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton, and Brimbank, the organization offers a range of services tailored to individual needs. These include trauma-informed counselling, crisis care, advocacy, and group programs, available to anyone aged 12 and over, as well as non-offending family members and friends.

Member for Western Metropolitan Region, Mr. Trung Luu MP, recently met with WestCASA representatives to discuss the support available for his constituents. “At this very distressing time, people need to know where to turn to,” Mr. Luu emphasized, highlighting the importance of accessible, professional help. He praised WestCASA’s flexible offerings, stating, “I’m gratified that WestCASA is offering our community support, which can be a single session, or a brief intervention of 1-4 sessions, or even longer-term solutions, if necessary, to help our community process these challenging matters.” This range of options ensures that individuals can access the level of care that suits their needs, from immediate crisis support to ongoing therapy.

For families directly impacted by the alleged assaults, WestCASA provides specialized counselling to address the emotional and psychological toll of trauma. Parents and carers of children under 18 can access extended counselling, while a dedicated advice line (1800 791 241) operates seven days a week to support those affected. The organization also offers trauma-informed yoga and group programs like “Strength to Strength” for women and “Towards Healing” for men, fostering community and resilience.

Mr. Luu urged residents to seek help, saying, “I urge residents in Melbourne’s west to utilise these services on offer – no need to try and manage these difficult circumstances on your own – help is available from people who specialise in this area and know Melbourne’s west.” He added, “We are all trying to process these traumatic events together, and I greatly appreciate that there are professional services on offer at these times.” WestCASA’s services, available weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm at (03) 9216 0444 or online at westcasa.org.au, are free, confidential, and inclusive, with interpreters available for non-English speakers.

The impact of sexual assault can be profound, often causing feelings of guilt, fear, or isolation. WestCASA’s trauma-informed approach helps individuals manage symptoms like nightmares or anxiety, empowering them to regain control. By reaching out, victims, families, and community members can find a safe, supportive space to heal. For those directly affected, additional resources are available at www.vic.gov.au/childcare-centres-investigation. In this challenging time, WestCASA’s services are a vital lifeline for Melbourne’s western suburbs.
