Suspected Ballot Heist Threatens Election Integrity in Tarneit North/West

Ballot integrity

A suspected break-in could affect voters in the Brinbeal and Wimba Wards, raising concerns about ballot security and election integrity.

A suspected break-in at one of  the only Australia Post mailboxes servicing areas of Tarneit North and West, located at Tarneit Central, has sparked concerns over the security of postal votes in the Wimba and Brinbeal Wards. The incident, which some have described as a “ballot heist,” raises significant questions about the integrity of the current election, with thousands of votes still yet to be cast.

The suspected crime leaves areas of Tarneit North and West without any postal box outside of business hours, severely limiting voters’ ability to submit their ballots. This is particularly alarming as this single red street posting box is the primary source for after-hours mail lodgement in the region, which is already under-resourced in terms of postal vote collection routes. Some voters from Brinbeal and Wimba Wards are expected to be affected by this incident.

There is an Australia Post shop at Wyndham Village Shopping Centre which is only accessible during business hours, and a post box is available for after hours.

Residents are now calling on the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to take immediate action to safeguard the integrity of the election and provide alternative avenues for voters to safely and securely cast their votes. Concerns have also been raised about whether those affected by the suspected break-in will be fined for missing postal vote deadlines. However, given that the incident has been reported, voters may be eligible to request a replacement ballot.

The lack of postal resources in Tarneit has been a long-standing issue, with the VEC previously criticised for underestimating the region’s needs during the 2020 election. This latest incident underscores those concerns, as hundreds of ballot papers could be compromised by the suspected theft.

Voters across Tarneit are now seeking guidance from the VEC on how they can safely deposit their votes, given the current situation. Additionally, there are growing calls for the Commission to conduct thorough checks on the return of all ballots in the Wimba and Brinbeal Wards to ensure that no tampered votes are included in the count.

The VEC has yet to issue a formal response to the suspected break-in, but there are mounting pressures for urgent measures to be put in place to protect the election process and maintain public confidence in the outcome.
