Synnot Street Speed Cut

Synnot Street Speed limit

In short:

Wyndham City will reduce Synnot Street’s speed limit to 50km/h from 17 July to improve safety. The decision follows an audit and addresses long-standing concerns over visibility at car park exits.

Speed limit drops to 50km/h

From 17 July, the speed limit on Synnot Street in Werribee will be reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h as part of a city-led effort to improve road safety.

The move follows a Notice of Motion raised by Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, who has long expressed concern over safety and visibility issues along Synnot Street, especially near car park entry and exit points.

The decision was supported by an independent road safety audit conducted in line with Australian Standards. The audit confirmed that lowering the speed limit, combined with the recent removal of 16 non-compliant parking bays, would significantly improve sight lines and reduce risks for all road users.

Cr Shaw described the change as “a common-sense, evidence-based approach that prioritizes community safety and aims to create a safer environment for all road users, including drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

She noted that the change responds directly to community concerns about visibility and safety along the street and emphasised the potential benefits for vulnerable road users.

“This initiative strikes a balance between the need for road safety and the community’s access needs, thereby helping to create a safer, more accessible City Centre for all,” Cr Shaw said.
