Tarneit and Werribee have ranked first and second nationally for electric vehicle uptake through the federal government’s Electric Car Discount, according to new figures.

Analysis released by the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) found Tarneit was Australia’s top postcode for battery electric vehicles purchased through novated leasing and the Electric Car Discount during the second quarter of 2026, with Werribee ranking second.

The report also found Tarneit had a rooftop solar density of 49 per cent, while Werribee recorded 36 per cent. Both suburbs were above Victoria’s average rooftop solar density of 32 per cent.

Victoria accounted for five of the top 10 postcodes nationwide for electric vehicle uptake during the quarter, with Clyde North, Craigieburn and Cranbourne also making the list.

NALSPA Chief Executive Officer Rohan Martin said the figures showed strong uptake in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

“Working Australians and their families living in the outer suburbs where rooftop solar is widespread are making the switch to EVs in record numbers and they’re turning to the Electric Car Discount to help make it a reality,” he said.

He said households with rooftop solar were increasingly using lower-cost electricity to charge their vehicles.

“If you live in the outer suburbs and have rooftop solar, it makes financial sense in the midst of unprecedented cost-of-living pressures to have an EV in your driveway too.”

The report comes as monthly data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and the Electric Vehicle Council showed battery electric vehicles accounted for more than one in five new vehicle sales in July 2026.
