In short:
Wyndham City Council has completed the $10.5 million upgrade of the Tarneit Road and Leakes Road intersection, with duplicated lanes, new traffic lights and dedicated cycling paths now open to traffic. It is the third major project delivered under council’s Connecting Wyndham program, with a further $15 million allocated to duplicate Leakes Road between Tarneit Road and Derrimut Road from late 2026.
Intersection duplication now open to traffic
Wyndham City Council has confirmed the completion of a $10.5 million upgrade to the Tarneit Road and Leakes Road intersection in Tarneit, with the duplicated intersection now open to motorists.
The works have added extra turning lanes in multiple directions and installed a new traffic light system, aimed at improving traffic flow through one of the area’s busiest junctions.
Wyndham City Mayor Councillor Mia Shaw said the completed works mark a significant milestone for the council’s Connecting Wyndham program. “This project is the third major project delivered through our Connecting Wyndham program and the duplication of this intersection is a major step forward for connectivity,” Cr Shaw said.
The project follows council’s announcement of the works in May 2025 and a progress update provided in July, as construction moved through its final stages.
Why the upgrade was needed
Tarneit’s rapid population growth has placed increasing pressure on local roads, with the intersection identified as a key pinch point for commuters travelling through the area. The upgrade was designed to increase turning capacity and reduce traffic disruptions at what has become one of Wyndham’s busiest intersections.
The project forms part of a broader push by council to keep pace with growth across the municipality, following its 18-month roads update detailing works planned across Wyndham’s suburbs.
Safer options for cyclists and pedestrians
Alongside the road duplication, council delivered new on-road and off-road cycling lanes through the intersection, giving cyclists a safer, separated route through the junction. Leakes Road’s service road, between Penrose Promenade and Tarneit Road, has also been resurfaced as part of the works.
Council said the combined works are intended to improve connectivity and safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians moving through the corridor.
What’s next for Leakes Road
The intersection upgrade is one stage in a broader plan for the corridor. Council has allocated a further $15 million in its 2026/27 Budget to duplicate Leakes Road between Tarneit Road and Derrimut Road, with construction expected to begin in late 2026.
