Watton Street arrest follows assault

A Tarneit man is in police custody after being arrested at a licensed venue on Watton Street in Werribee on Wednesday night, with officers linking him to an alleged assault inside a St Kilda business earlier this week.

Police were called to the Werribee venue on Wednesday, 29 April after reports of a man behaving erratically. Officers attended and arrested the 39-year-old after identifying him as a person of interest in relation to an earlier incident in St Kilda, according to Victoria Police.

Police said the alleged assault took place when a man entered a business on Fitzroy Street, St Kilda about 12pm on Tuesday, 28 April. According to officers, the man approached another man inside the business and assaulted him before fleeing the scene.

The Tarneit man was deemed unfit for interview on Wednesday night, police said. He is expected to be interviewed by detectives on Thursday, 30 April.

The Werribee strip has been the focus of repeated police attention in recent months. Wyndham TV previously reported on a knife incident on Watton Street in February, in which a 39-year-old man was arrested following an alleged daylight disturbance, and a Watton Street brawl involving an alleged cyclist assault in October last year.

No charges had been laid at the time of the police release. The name of the licensed venue in Werribee has not been confirmed by police.

Anyone who witnessed the St Kilda incident, has dashcam or CCTV footage, or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an online confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
