A Cultural Tribute in the Cosmos: 'Coolamon' Reflects Indigenous Heritage in the Race to Name Australia's Lunar Rover

Tarneit’s own Anil Fred has found himself among the select few in contention to etch his mark on Australian space history. His proposed name, ‘Coolamon,’ has secured a spot as one of the four finalists in the competition to name Australia’s Lunar Rover, a pioneering venture set to embark on a lunar expedition by 2026 as part of the Australian Space Agency project.

The naming competition, which drew entries from more than 8,200 participants, including individuals and schools from across the country, has now entered its next phase. Judges have meticulously narrowed down the extensive list of submissions to just four potential names. Now, the fate of the rover’s name lies in the hands of the public, who are invited to cast their votes for their preferred choice.

Anil Fred expressed his gratitude at being shortlisted, saying, “Being one of the finalists among over 8,200 entrants is an absolute honour, and the inspiration behind my entry is deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of Australian culture and heritage.”

Fred drew inspiration from the Coolamon, a significant artifact in Indigenous Australian culture. He shared, “The story of the Coolamon, a significant artefact in Indigenous Australian culture, deeply moved me. It symbolises nurturing, wisdom, and a profound connection with the land. The Coolamon is not just a tool; it represents a legacy of knowledge and respect passed down through generations.”

“Coolamon” is an Aboriginal name meaning “dish or vessel for holding food or water”

Highlighting the Coolamon’s symbolic significance, Fred sees the rover’s potential name as a bridge between ancient traditions and modern exploration. “Naming the rover ‘Coolamon’ would be a tribute to their enduring spirit and the timeless traditions that enrich our nation’s history. It’s a name that bridges the ancient and the modern, a name that honours both Indigenous heritage and the spirit of exploration and discovery.”

Fred sees the competition as an opportunity to pay homage to the Aboriginal people of Australia and hopes that ‘Coolamon’ will be embraced as a symbol of the nation’s shared journey towards understanding and unity. “With ‘Coolamon’ in the running to be the name of a space rover, it’s another chance for Australia to show its support for this rich heritage. This is more than just naming a rover; it’s about acknowledging and celebrating the depth and diversity of our nation.”

The voting period is open until 11:59 PM (AEDT) on Friday, December 1, 2023. Australians can cast their votes and contribute to shaping the country’s space history by visiting [the official voting website]. The winning name will be announced on Wednesday, December 6, 2023.
