Emergency lane chaos tackled

Traffic lights will be installed on the Werribee Main Road bridge next week in a move to reduce the notorious queues that form in the Princes Freeway emergency lane during the afternoon peak — sometimes stretching for up to two kilometres.

The queue, which regularly builds up at the C109 Werribee exit, forces Werribee-bound drivers to sit in the emergency lane for extended periods, creating both traffic delays and serious safety concerns.

The new temporary signals will operate on weekday afternoons, holding back Geelong-bound traffic on the bridge to create a break and allow vehicles exiting the freeway to enter Werribee more safely and efficiently.

Member for Werribee John Lister said the change is a direct result of sustained efforts to address the issue.

“Just like you, I drive on our roads every day, and I know how frustrating the queue is at Werribee Main Road Interchange,” said Member for Werribee John Lister.

“Following meetings with the Minister, raising the question in Parliament and working with Major Roads Projects, we have secured this first step towards fixing the problem.”

“More work needs to be done, which is why Labor is upgrading the Main Road Interchange to reduce congestion and get people home sooner.”

The temporary lights are part of early works for a broader upgrade of the Princes Freeway and Werribee Main Road Interchange. Detailed site investigations and pre-construction activities will continue over the coming months, with construction timeframes to be confirmed once planning progresses.

The interchange upgrade is part of a $333.5 million investment targeting key intersections in Werribee and Wyndham Vale, with the full project expected to be completed by 2030.
