Watton Street comes alive with flags, music, and dancing as Wyndham’s Tongan community celebrates Tonga’s thrilling 25-24 victory
Last night, Wyndham’s Tongan community transformed Watton Street in Werribee into a vibrant celebration hub, celebrating Tonga’s latest sporting triumph.
The street was alive with the sound of car horns, loud music booming from vehicle sound systems, and a sea of Tongan flags waving in a jubilant display of national pride. Watton Street took on the air of a large-scale parade, lined with locals dancing, singing, and toasting to the victory.

The celebrations followed Tonga’s thrilling 25-24 win over New Zealand’s Kiwis at Go Media Stadium, where a 75th-minute field goal by Tongan halfback Isaiya Katoa secured their place in history.

The close-fought victory, praised by Addin Fonua-Blake as “unforgettable,” has earned Tonga its first spot in a major final. The team will face Australia in Sydney next Sunday, marking a significant moment in Tongan rugby history after their memorable 2017 World Cup journey and a defining victory over the Kangaroos two years ago.

In Werribee, police cruised through Watton Street a couple of times, surveying the celebrations before moving on without incident. At one point, a burnout filled the air with smoke, adding an extra layer of excitement to the night.

The celebration was a joyous display of Tongan pride and culture, capturing the spirit and resilience of a community thrilled by their team’s historic achievement.
