A tense standoff unfolded on Lawler Street in Point Cook today 7th of September, beginning at 8:30 a.m., and ultimately leading to a tragic outcome. The incident required the involvement of the Critical Incident Response Team, which arrived around 10 a.m.
The initial reason for police presence at the Lawler Street property was a welfare check. Officers responded to the call at 8:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they encountered a man from the residence who behaved erratically and aggressively, refusing to cooperate with the police.
To manage the escalating situation, police cordoned off the area and engaged in negotiations with the man. After some time, the man came out of the property without further incident. He was then taken into custody by police officers and placed on a stretcher for a medical assessment by ambulance personnel. Tragically, during this assessment, the 44-year-old man from Point Cook appeared to become unresponsive and, despite immediate medical attention, passed away shortly thereafter.
Authorities have confirmed that there was no imminent threat to the surrounding community during the incident, which occurred near the Point Cook town centre and drew the attention of concerned onlookers.
A woman who was inside the property at the time was unharmed and did not require medical attention.
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event continue, police will prepare a report for the Coroner to provide details on the sequence of events leading to the man’s untimely death.
