Wyndham Schools Invited to Boost Tree Canopy

Greater Western Water (GWW) has announced the return of its Trees for Schools program in 2025, inviting schools across its service region to participate.

The program provides local primary and secondary schools with up to 50 native tree tube stock, along with stakes and guards to support their establishment and growth. It aims to increase tree canopy cover and expand green spaces across Melbourne’s western suburbs.

GWW’s General Manager of Strategy and Partnerships, Kessia Thomson, highlighted the program’s environmental benefits.

“By planting new trees with the help of our local schools, we’re improving air quality, providing urban cooling, and creating valuable habitats for local birds and wildlife,” Ms Thomson said.

In 2024, GWW distributed more than 2,500 trees to 52 schools across its service area. The organisation aims to expand its reach in 2025.

Melbourne’s western suburbs have some of the lowest tree canopy coverage in Victoria, with many areas below 15% and some as low as 5%. This is significantly lower than the Victorian Government’s target of 30% canopy cover, underscoring the need for increased tree planting to enhance urban liveability.

The Trees for Schools program is supported by the Victorian Government through the More Trees for a Cooler Greener West initiative and Greening the West.

GWW’s service area includes Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Wyndham, and Yarra, as well as parts of Hume, Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, and Moorabool.

Expressions of interest for the 2025 program are open until 4 April. Schools can find more information and apply at Trees for Schools | Greater Western Water.
