In short:

A Truganina tyre recycler has been fined nearly $10,000 for failing to track waste tyres using Victoria’s mandatory EPA Waste Tracker system. The EPA says tyres remain a key focus due to growing concerns over illegal dumping.

Tyre Crumb, a waste tyre recycler based in Truganina, has been penalised for not adequately tracking the movements of tyres. Waste tyres fall under the category of Reportable Priority Waste (RPW), which necessitates proper disposal at authorised sites and requires tracking via the EPA Waste Tracker system.

EPA Manager Compliance Programs, Alison McRae, noted, “For some time now, EPA has been telling businesses they must use Waste Tracker when they move their waste. It’s the system that tracks RPW from the time it is generated to its ultimate disposal and ensures that the process is compliant.”

While the EPA does not accuse Tyre Crumb of intentionally disposing of tyres unlawfully, the company’s failure to document their movement or acceptance in the Waste Tracker has resulted in a $9,880 fine.

The EPA has prioritised the enforcement of waste disposal laws due to a recent increase in illegal waste dumping. Waste tyres, in particular, are a significant concern and will continue to be a focus for the regulator, according to McRae.
