Delayed Results Spark Frustration as Postal Votes Keep Outcome Uncertain
The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has emphasised the need for accuracy and integrity in counting votes for the Werribee district by-election, urging patience as postal ballots continue to arrive this week.
Electoral Commissioner Sven Bluemmel acknowledged the heightened emotions surrounding the close contest in Werribee but reinforced the importance of a thorough and transparent counting process.
“We understand the desire for an immediate result, but counting takes time, and accuracy is our top priority,” Mr Bluemmel said. “This ensures electoral integrity and a result that can withstand scrutiny.”
He reassured voters that every ballot is carefully checked, with candidate-appointed representatives overseeing each stage of the count.
Mr Bluemmel also noted an increase in early and postal voting, with a significant number of postal ballots expected to arrive throughout the week. As the postal receipt period remains open until 6 pm on Friday, 14 February, a final result may not be available on election night.
“All early votes, election day votes, and postal ballots received before the close of voting on Saturday were fully counted on election night,” he said. “Primary and two-candidate preferred (2CP) counts were completed as planned.”
While election nights are fast-paced, Mr Bluemmel reiterated the need to follow due process and maintain the commission’s independence. Standard vote re-checking procedures are now underway to ensure accuracy.
The VEC is closely monitoring the return of postal votes, with primary results expected to be available on the evening of Friday, 14 February, followed by preference distributions in the days that follow.
