Explore the Latest Updates on Victoria's E-Scooter Program as the Trial Continues Through the Warm Months

The e-scooter trial in Victoria, including the City of Wyndham, is being extended into the summer season to gather a more comprehensive dataset for future program decisions. Over the trial period, more than one million individuals registered for e-scooter rentals, resulting in five million trips and a total distance travelled of over nine million kilometres.

The trial has proven successful even during the winter months. Still, the aim now is to observe its performance during an extended holiday season and warmer weather to ensure the collected data is thorough.

In Victoria, which includes areas like the City of Wyndham, there are an estimated 100,000 privately owned e-scooters, with private users comprising half of all e-scooter riders and the well-known shared scooter rental companies.

Fortunately, there were no significant safety incidents during the trial phase. It’s worth noting that the trial involving private e-scooters has only occurred during the winter season. Data reveals that both e-scooter usage and safety incidents tend to peak during warmer periods.

Riders are strongly advised to wear helmets, refrain from riding on sidewalks, avoid carrying passengers, and adhere to the same regulations regarding alcohol, drugs, and mobile device usage as they would when operating a car.

E-scooter riders are required to maintain a maximum speed of 20 kilometres per hour, and e-scooters must not be capable of exceeding 25 kilometres per hour to be deemed suitable for use. Additionally, it remains illegal to operate a rental scheme without the consent and approval of the local council, including the City of Wyndham.

The Department of Transport and Planning is working on a guide for councils, including those in the City of Wyndham, offering advice on how to manage e-scooter sharing programs, including issues related to parking management and operator insurance requirements.

The program will be closely monitored by authorities, and if necessary, regulations will be adjusted to address any emerging concerns. The trial is slated to continue for six more months, concluding on April 5, 2024.
