State Announces New Strategy to Tackle Rise of Eating Disorders Across Victoria

The state of Victoria has recently announced its new strategy to address the rise of eating disorders across the region. This strategy, called the Victorian Eating Disorders Strategy 2024–2031, was developed with input from those with lived experience and their loved ones. It focuses on three key areas: prevention and early intervention, accessible evidence-based treatment, and wellbeing and recovery support.

As part of this strategy, the state has also revealed plans for new tailored services, with a total investment of $31 million. These services will include a day program at Barwon Health, in-home intensive early engagement and treatment programs at Alfred Health and Austin Health, and ongoing treatment and support services provided by Melbourne Health, Austin Health, and Monash Health.

In addition, $6.4 million will be allocated towards 10 early intervention professionals through area mental health and wellbeing services. Belinda Caldwell, the chief executive of Eating Disorders Victoria, emphasized the complexity and pain associated with all eating disorders. She also expressed hope for the impact of this new strategy, stating, “There is a long way to go – but this strategy lays a strong foundation for more accessible, person-centred care. The priorities of early intervention and peer support in this strategy will be critical for real, lasting change.”

The need for such a strategy is evident, as the number of eating disorder-related emergency department presentations has increased from an average of 23 per week to 32 per week in the past year. With the implementation of this new strategy, it is hoped that more individuals struggling with eating disorders will receive the support and care they need.
