Victoria's Offshore Wind Terminal Project Aims to Lead Australia's Renewable Energy Transition

The Victorian Government is set to spearhead the growth of the offshore wind energy sector with the commencement of planning and development for the Victorian Renewable Energy Terminal, situated near the Port of Hastings. Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, and Minister for Ports and Freight, Melissa Horne, recently inspected the site where the terminal will be constructed, solidifying Victoria’s position as a frontrunner in offshore wind energy in Australia.

A substantial investment of $27 million from the Victorian Budget for 2023/24 is poised to generate numerous employment opportunities, attract significant investments, and provide a source of renewable and dependable energy for all Victorians via offshore wind farms.

Victoria is primed to host Australia’s inaugural offshore wind farm, aligning with ambitious targets of achieving at least 2 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2032, 4 GW by 2035, and 9 GW by 2040, all while working towards a net-zero emissions goal by 2045. Notably, there is currently no Australian port capable of accommodating large-scale offshore wind construction, making this Labor Government initiative a pivotal step in establishing critical infrastructure essential for the nation.

The Port of Hastings has been selected as the optimal location for assembling offshore wind infrastructure, benefiting from its extensive zoned land, proximity to existing port facilities, deepwater access, and its adjacency to offshore wind projects off the Gippsland coast.

The project will undergo a comprehensive Environment Effects Statement (EES) process, allowing community input before advancing further. The terminal, situated at the Old Tyabb Reclamation Area within the existing port and industrial zone, will be designed as a multi-user facility equipped for receiving, assembling, and installing offshore wind foundations, towers, and turbines. This development will feature new berths, robust pavements, and substantial supporting infrastructure.

The strategic significance of the Port of Hastings is outlined in the government’s Victorian Commercial Ports Strategy. For additional details, please visit energy.vic.gov.au/renewable-energy/offshore-wind-energy.

Minister for Ports and Freight, Melissa Horne, remarked, “This project will give industry further confidence to kick-start renewable energy projects and deliver thousands of ongoing job opportunities for Victorians in our renewable energy future.”

Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, asserted, “Offshore wind is a key pillar of Victoria’s renewable energy future. It will create thousands of jobs, generate billions in investment and provide more reliable power for all Victorians.”
