Victorians Left in the Cold: Energy Minister’s Delay Halts Vital Electricity Rebates

Energy rebates Wyndham

While Queensland and WA residents benefit from $300 rebates, Victorians are still waiting as winter bills skyrocket.

While residents in Queensland and Western Australia have been receiving their first quarter 2024-25 Commonwealth Government electricity bill rebates since 1 July, Victorian households, including those in Wyndham, are still left waiting. The rebates, totalling $300 per household over the year, are meant to provide some relief during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, but have yet to be signed off by Victorian Energy Minister, Lily D’Ambrosio.

Despite the rebates being fully funded by the Commonwealth Government, Victorian residents and businesses, particularly in areas like Wyndham where winter heating bills are soaring, have not yet seen any relief. The delay stems from the need for Minister D’Ambrosio to authorise energy retailers to apply the rebates to electricity bills—a step that has yet to be taken.

Shadow Minister for Energy, Affordability and Security, David Davis, has criticised the delay, stating: “Victorians, including those in Wyndham, need their electricity bill rebates now. Thanks to the Allan Labor Government’s failed energy policies, heating homes and businesses has never been more expensive.”

Davis added, “The minimum Minister D’Ambrosio needs to do is process the required paperwork and ensure money flows to Victorians this week. Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage our energy system, and Victorians are paying the price.”
